Christmas Social

When:       6pm Monday 10th December 2012

Where:      Glen Waverley Community Centre, 700 Waverley Road, Glen Waverley

The Christmas Social was a huge success.  Over 80 members enjoyed the delicious 2-course spit roast dinner and entertainers, Janette and Allan, really did have us “Putting on the Ritz”.  Their repertoire included some old and new songs that had us singing along and doing the “Nutbush” on the dance floor.  Liane even led the Conga Line outside!  The Raffle winners were Myra & Kath (Ladies), Albert & Ron (Men), Joy, Judith & Alec – all from the Casino Bus Trip Group table – (main hampers provided by local MP, Anna Burke) and Table 9.  Organisers, Dot, Erica, Liane and David, and MC, Lawrie, are to be thanked for a great end of the year event.

General Meeting

When:       7.30pm Monday 19th November 2012

Where:      Glen Waverley Community Centre, 700 Waverley Road, Glen Waverley

We had a very interesting talk by David Godfrey, the Production Manager of Melway – the ‘street directory’ company of Mt.Waverley.  Their 1st Edition was published in May 1966 and cost $2.50, but it was ‘born’ 5 years earlier by David’s father, Merv Godfrey.  This was before computers.  Each of the 106 maps was hand-drawn by the cartographers.  David brought a Light Box and demonstrated the original tools used for the scribing and cut & peel masking of the polyester sheets.  Several sheets were overlaid for each map – one for each colour.  Melways has expanded into Sydney and Brisbane and production is now computerised.  They employ just 8 people in Melbourne.  The 2013 40th Edition Melways contains over 500 maps.  Every change is first viewed using ‘NearMap’ on the internet then checked by driving around the streets.  After the talk, many members bought the new 40th Edition, the (big, heavy) ‘large print’ version and the commemorative copy of the 1st Edition in a special presentation box.

The updated WRAG Policies were approved by members at the November General Meeting.  They describe how WRAG is run and also comply with the new 2012 Associations Incorporation Reform Act that came into effect on 26th November 2012.  They will provide a guideline for the new 2013 Committee.

Annual Picnic

When:       12 noon Monday 5th November 2012

Where:      Southern Community Centre, Rupert Drive, Mulgrave

Perhaps the grey skies turned a few away.  However 35 members enjoyed the day.  The usual games, Melbourne Cup sweeps and an orienteering walk interrupted the talking and eating.  Pat won the hamper.  Having run the picnic for many many years this was Dot’s last one.  Well done!

Tesselaars Tulip Farm Day Trip

Friday 5th October

 9:30am to 4:30pm

This day was part of the Tesselaar 2012 Tulip Festival’s ‘Irish Weekend’ of fun.  As well as all the beautiful flowers there was live entertainment, market stalls and even a sculpture competition!

This was a combined WRAG & Monash Council PALS event

as part of the Monash Seniors Festival celebrations

What an enjoyable time we had at Tesselaars Tulip Farm on Friday 5th October 2012.  This was the first time WRAG and Monash Council ‘Seniors Festival’ had combined to organise and subsidise an event.  Over 80 members and Monash residents went to Silvan in 2 buses.  The day had an Irish theme with pipers, dancers and a band providing entertainment.  The tulips and other flowers were in full bloom.  So many wonderful colours.  Some members even took the tractor ride around the rows of tulips.  Stalls were selling pizza, baked potatoes, profertjes, ice cream and Dutch beer, so no one went hungry.

Where:      Glen Waverley Community Centre, 700 Waverley Road, Glen Waverley

John Gardner, "The Dunny Man”, gave us a very humorous talk at our August General Meeting. So many ‘dirty’ jokes and stories!  It was amazing what used to happen before septic tanks and sewer pipes were installed in Melbourne.

The Dunny Man

Yellow Cabs Tour

When:       11.30am Tuesday 15th May 2012

Where:      13CABS Communications Centre at 35 Downing Street in Oakleigh

We visited the 13CABS Communications Centre in Oakleigh last month.  About 26 members were shown over the facility by Simon Purssey and his tour guides, Fiona and Mathew.  It was a real eye-opener to find out what services they provide in addition to the basic ‘hail a cab’ function.  We saw a 1923 taxi in the car park as well as 3 modern yellow cabs that were for sale.  Drivers were viewed attending a training session run by a blind person.  She was explaining her special needs and those of her guide dog.  We saw the sophisticated call centre and were shown examples of the information that is kept about regular 13CABS users, such as who is their "First Choice Driver” and where exactly the cab needs to stop to pick them up in their block of flats or retirement village.  The tour concluded with refreshments and 3 WRAG members even ‘won’ a showbag!

Most Active Member
At the May General Meeting, Elaine was presented with the ‘Most Active WRAG Member 2012’ award.  She is in 12 WRAG Activity Groups and Convenor of 2 of them!  She is also a member of other seniors social groups in the area.  Her diary is full.

She will be responsible for organising our Activity Group’s listings on the Monash Community Directory, issuing media releases about our functions and activities, promoting WRAG Activity Groups to seniors living in and around Monash / Glen Waverley and encouraging other local activity groups to come ‘under the WRAG umbrella’.  Liane can be contacted on publicity@wrag.org.au

Port Phillip Bay
David Bryant was the speaker at the May General Meeting.  He is an underwater photographer and he told us about the underwater environment of Port Phillip Bay.  His talk was illustrated by excellent photos and a short video.  We didn’t realise what a fascinating and diverse range of sea creatures and plants we had so close to Melbourne.  Did you know that the Portsea Hole is just 500m off the pier and is 33 metres deep with the wreck of a yacht at the bottom?  It is a very popular site for SCUBA divers.  Victoria’s marine emblem, the Weedy Sea Dragon, is also found in the Bay.
